WHAT IS A NEW YORK STATE VEHICLE INSPECTION?
This inspection ensures that vehicles are in good working order and do not emit harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. Once a year, all New York registered vehicles must undergo a New York State vehicle inspection.
WHY DO I NEED ONE?
A New York State vehicle inspection is a legal requirement, plus, it's an important part of keeping your vehicle safe. New York's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all vehicles registered in New York State to pass an annual safety inspection performed by a licensed station.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I FAIL MY VEHICLE INSPECTION?

WHAT IF I NEED AN INSPECTION EXTENSION?
If you purchase or receive a vehicle from out-of-state, you may be entitled to an inspection extension under the terms of New York State DMV. You must complete the vehicle inspection within ten days of registering the vehicle in the state of New York. Once you register the vehicle, any inspection previously issued to the previous registrant becomes invalid.
WHEN DO I NEED TO GET MY VEHICLE INSPECTED?
The New York State vehicle inspection is performed annually (or every two years if your vehicle is over 25 years old). The state wants you to have the inspection completed before midnight on the last day of the month that's listed on your current certificate of inspection. Also, any time that there is a change of registrant on any motor vehicle or trailer, then it needs to be inspected.

WHAT IF I'M A NEW RESIDENT IN NEW YORK?
Welcome to New York! As a new resident, your vehicle's previous state inspection will remain valid. When it does expire, or when your registration is a year old (whichever comes first), then you'll need to get your car, truck, or van inspected at a New York State Inspection Station.
